Samchillian - a musical instrument based on relativity. [Mar. 1st, 2006|09:41 pm]
Eitan Shefer
my graduation project from the Industrial design dept at the Bezalel academy of art and design.

for a high quality and STEREO version of the film - use the download option at the google video page!

An electronic musical instrument which takes Leon Gruenbaum's samchillian concept and defines a possible product design for it.

the samchillian is a new type of musical instrument which uses the concept of keys representing relative notes, rather then fixed notes (as in a piano). an explanation of what that means is aparant in the film.

If you have any questions, request or any interesting propositions - feel free to contact me at thru this webform if you like, or leave a comment. This includes media requests for more information, print quality photos, and so on.

The challenge was to make a product, which would be aesthetic, ergonomic and could be used on stage. Since this is a new and an unusual type of musical instrument a lot of thought went into defining an new iconic shape but one which still comunicates as a musical instrument.

The film was made by Eitan Shefer (AKA: me) in collaburation with 3d animator extraordinare and motion graphics wizard Eric Lerner.

Dori Regev supplied the academic guidance.

Oded Andman shot some of the photos (main link and those with the model).

Leon supplied the core idea.

*I'll update this page, with more info, and photos as time progresses. stay tuned.

Wow, cool.
and that's the first time that someone is actually thanking me. It's cool, even though I have no idea why.
Sooooooo... when are you coming?

Re: Mrs. Boasson

it has something to do with occuping your living room for a week, at a crucial point in the process, me thinks..

and I appologize for that spelling mistake. the credits were the last thing that was done on the film - I think it was 5AM..

Re: Brilliant

Hello,

I really like this device and please let me know how to order / test this device. I'm a musican who started in the 'normal' world (drums, gitar and bass) and ended up in the synthesis world. I've never felt comfirtable using the 'normal' keyboard based on the C ladder. Why 'C'???

Please go on with shortening the line between mind and the result by introducing this kind of devices.

Please contact me.

Nice Design & Concept

Maybe not what you want to hear but I'd bet Nintendo would be interested in something like this (or similar) for their Revolution console

Brilliant!!

A beautiful design equal to the genius of Leon Gruenbaum's ground-breaking concept! I'll take three in each color!
(Seriously, I can't wait to get my hands on one. This is going to revolutionize music. Let me know what I can do to help get this out there.)
